Homebirth

Benefits of planned home birth include lower rates of maternal morbidity, such as postpartum hemorrhage, and perineal lacerations, and lower rates of interventions such as episiotomy, instrumental vaginal birth, and cesarean birth (Zielinski et al., 2015).

Risks

No matter where you choose to give birth, there will be the same risks in each setting. Giving birth at home vs the hospital is no different. In fact, homebirth is actually safer than hospital birth. Homebirth midwives do a risk assessment at intake and again at 28 and 36 weeks to make sure patients are still appropriate for out of hospital birth. To keep risk low, there is always an emergency preparedness plan ready in the event a transport is needed. If anything starts to creep outside of normal during pregnancy or birth, your midwife is trained to be aware of these things and provide appropriate recommendations. Proximity to the hospital in case of transfer could also be a risk if client does not live close.

Benefits

There are many benefits of home birth including:

  • Giving birth in a familiar setting

  • Less pressure to defer from birth plan

  • No limit on number of people who can support you

  • Control of your environment.

  • Birth team is there for without having to care for other patients

  • Able to give birth without restrictions on labor positions

  • More likely to have a waterbirth if that is desired.

  • Freedom to eat.

  • Participation from clients and partners
